Volunteer Services

You can help the Florida Hospital Heartland Division Volunteer Services provide top-notch care for our neighbors. Join more than 1,000 Florida Hospital Volunteers today. There's something for everyone.

There are many fun and rewarding positions within the health system available to willing people. Our facilities need volunteers at more than 68 locations throughout Sebring, Lake Placid and Wauchula in Highlands and Hardee counties. We have volunteer slots as greeters, transporters/escorts, clerical workers, floral deliverers, gift shop workers, just to give you a taste of what is available.

Profits from volunteer services go toward scholarships in the community, advancement of the medical equipment in our facilities, and many other seasonal and patient assistance programs. Thank you for your interest in volunteering at our Florida Hospital Heartland Division facilities.

How Do I Become a Volunteer?

It’s easy and rewarding! Please choose the link that fits you and click on it to reach a Volunteer Application. Print out the application, complete it and bring it to the Volunteer Services Department inside Florida Hospital in Sebring, or mail it to us at FHHD Volunteer Services, 4200 Sun 'n Lake Blvd. Sebring, FL 33872.  We are located on the second floor of the hospital just to the right of the front elevators. You can also choose to pick-up an application in Volunteer Services.

What Can I Expect As A Volunteer?

Our volunteers serve in various departments throughout the hospital and at several off-site facilities. We make every effort to match your talents and interests to the hospitals needs. Before you begin volunteering with us you must complete the following requirements:

Orientation
All volunteers must attend a two and a half hour session with Director of Volunteer Services regarding volunteer policies, work hours, jobs availability, by-laws, mission, benefits, and the rules and regulations of the hospital.
Work at least one shift on-the-job training with an experienced volunteer in your assigned service area.
Receive a tour of the hospital.

TB Skin Test
All new volunteers are required to have a TB Skin Test. This is free of charge to volunteers.

Photo ID
All new volunteers must have a photo identification badge. This is done by appointment at the Human Resources office.

Uniforms
Uniforms are on sale in the Volunteer Office and are $17.00 each (this includes the cost of the uniform plus tax). We have several styles available to choose from.

Volunteer Service Areas

Here is a list and basic description of some of the 70 areas where we currently have Volunteers working, to give you an idea of what kind of activities are done by Volunteers in the hospital. These are just a sample of the different volunteer opportunities to choose from.

Accounts Payable (Off-Site Location)

  • Filing
  • Opening and sorting mail
  • Copying bills, and forwarding copies to different departments
  • Pulling invoices etc.

Cardiac Rehabilitation
(Off-Site Location) (Need more help during the winter months)

  • Filing, sorting
  • Taking blood pressures (only if volunteer has nursing background)
  • Start machines for patients
  • Make education packets

Catheterization Laboratory

  • Putting away stock
  • Assemble Catheterization packets (charts)
  • Answering phones
  • Escorting patients
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Chaplain’s Office

  • Answering phones
  • Calling churches for patients
  • Greet visitors
  • Make appointments for chaplains
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Clinical Education

  • Assemble packets
  • Photocopying
  • Grade Tests
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Copy Center
(Chart Room)

  • Assemble hospital packets
  • Deliver chart packets to nursing areas
  • Inventory and maintain forms
  • Make copies
  • Sort chart tabs
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager

Crafters

  • Making craft items for patients to enjoy- we have patterns available
  • This volunteer position can also be done at your home


Diabetes Center
(Off-Site Location)

  • Answer phone and take messages
  • Photocopying
  • Filing
  • Assemble booklets
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Dietary – Café

  • Proved assistance to visitors and cafeteria employees
  • Assist customers in find items, help them feel welcomed
  • Stock/restock condiments (i.e.: ketchup, mustard jellies, jam, straws, napkins, etc.)
  • Assist in maintaining the desserts, and salads
  • Clean tables and countertops
  • Assist in keeping all areas neat, clean, and stocked
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager

 
Dietary – Kitchen Prep

  • Help in prep work, cut desserts, etc.
  • Wrap utensils
  • Familiarize yourself with merchandise and where it is kept
  • Stock during busy hours
  • Notify cook when food needs replenishing and assist with replenishment
  • Assist with dishes and other duties as requested
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager

Dietary- Menus

  • Retrieve clipboard and several pencils from Dietician’s Office
  • Pick-up completed menus from Patient Care Areas
  • Verify the patient on the list is the patient in the room
  • Check off names after picking up menus
  • Assist patients filling out the menus
  • When completed, return clipboard to Nutritional Services
  • Pass on any patient requests by writing notes on the menus and forms on the clipboard
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager

Emergency Room – Inside

  • Relate to patients with concern and compassion
  • Answering phones
  • Assist nurses in calming patients and/or family members
  • Help control visitor traffic
  • Restock linens and supplies
  • Fold and band Patient Belongings Bags with elastic and fill bins
  • Transfer patients to floors (by wheelchair only)
  • Assist staff in making beds after patients leave
  • Assist with paperwork (copying, sorting, or filing)
  • Offer to get family member a drink
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Emergency Room – Lobby Area

  • Greet people
  • Be sensitive to needs and concerns of others
  • Assist in keeping patients and/or family members calm
  • Help control visitor traffic
  • Offer to get visitors a hot/cold drink in the cafeteria
  • Direct all visitors, patients or others to appropriate areas
  • Be alert to the happenings at the ER entrance by providing wheelchair for anyone having difficulty
  • Ask for clinical staff assistance if some one needs help getting in or out of wheelchair
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Fitness Center
(One On-Site & Two Off-Site Locations)

  • Welcome guests and verify memberships
  • Assist staff in answering phones
  • Assist with mailings
  • Wipe down exercise equipment
  • Clean mirrors and see that towels are stocked
  • Assist with filing, photocopying, and running errands
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Flower Delivery

  • Welcome new patients every day
  • Present yourself with a smile and radiate happiness – This is contagious
  • Present patients with token bud vase of welcome
  • Water plants and/or flowers in the rooms and nurses station
  • Visit with patient – converse, read, and assist them writing letters for them
  • Give them a greeting card specially made by our "Special Volunteers"


Foundation

  • Answering phones
  • Filing and photocopying
  • Assist with mailings
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Gift Shop

  • Greet customers and help them to find gifts
  • Cashier-following procedures and policy
  • Dusting shelves, and keeping the shop clean
  • Be sure all items are priced, if not, put in backroom for pricing
  • Keep greeting cards in order
  • Answer phone

Human Resources

Laboratory

Library

  • Help people get information
  • Keep files of books, pamphlets, videos and magazines
  • Take cart to patient’s rooms (crossword puzzles, cards, games)

Mammography

  • Answer phones
  • Escort patients
  • Fill out worksheets
  • Make copies
  • Fill out folders

Marketing
(Off-Site Location)

  • Clipping newspaper articles for placement in a scrapbook
  • Make phone calls to local Chambers, etc.
  • Assist with Special Events

Medical Records

  • Pull charts for doctors
  • Distribute and copy doctor’s transcription
  • File in patient charts
  • Sort mail into doctor’s boxes
  • File patient charts into appropriate section of main file
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Medical Surgical Units
(All Patient Care Units)

  • Assist in distributing and picking-up food trays
  • Visit with patients as time allows
  • Assist patients with eating if necessary
  • Bring fresh water (if allowed)
  • Stock latex gloves and the linen in small closet
  • Assist Unit Clerks or Nurses as requested
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Nuclear Medicine

  • Escort patients
  • Assist staff as needed
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


OB Baby Photo Program

  • Schedule, take and print and save baby pictures
  • Maintain family wait area
  • Fold laundry (shirts, burp cloths, etc.)
  • Must be very computer literate 
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Outpatient Surgery Waiting Room

  • Run errands for nurses
  • Escort patients to other departments as requested
  • Check on patient for waiting family members and explain our routines
  • Get ice for Outpatient and Recovery areas.
  • Serve refreshments to family of surgery patients and visit with them
  • Keep Waiting Room neat, provide crayons and coloring books to kids
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Pain Management

  • Filing and photocopying
  • Greeting Patients
  • Making beds
  • Discharging patients
  • Putting packets of forms together

Patient Financial Services
(Off-Site Location)

  • Operate image scanning machine
  • Pull copies of checks from computer for refund
  • Pull check vouchers manually for refunds
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Payroll
(Off-Site Location) (Bi-Weekly & Special Holidays)

  • Fold and stuff checks and inserts in envelopes every other Wednesday 8-12 a.m.
  • Assist with special holiday stuffing’s (on alternate days)
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager

Pediatrics

  • Clean up playroom and kitchen, as needed
  • Restock gloves in room and nurse’s station
  • Assist Unit Clerk or Nurses as requested
  • Make beds as needed
  • Distribute newspapers, crayons, books, etc


Pharmacy

  • Answer phone
  • Make Copies
  • Run errands
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Purchasing Office

  • Answer phone
  • Make Copies
  • Filing forms by numbers 
  • Use duplicator machine
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager

 
Radiology

  • Filing of x-ray film in jackets in alphabetical order
  • Able to push wheelchairs & stretchers (with trained employee) to and from rooms
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Risk/Case Management

  • Answer phone
  • Alphabetize and file
  • Filing
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager

Shuttle Driver

  • Provide transportation in or out of hospital to the parking lot
  • Fill fuel tank as needed
  • Provide transportation to the warehouse as needed
  • Be careful, friendly, courteous, and considerate to patrons
  • Report to volunteer office any problems with operation of golf carts
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Surgery Scrubs

  • Take care of nourishment room
  • Strip beds, clean, and make them up
  • Bring patient whatever they need in nourishment
  • Make up packet (gown, hat, footsies)
  • Ringer packs and IV setups – have them ready and stocked
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Therapy Center
(Off-Site Location)

  • Making patients feel welcomed
  • Light secretarial duties
  • Assisting in the observation of patients in gym area
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Volunteer Office

  • Answer phones and greet visitors pleasantly
  • Stuff and fold bills (as needed)
  • Make copies
  • Make calls as needed

Waiting Rooms
(2nd and 3rd Floors)

  • Greet each person coming off the elevator with a smile and helpful attitude
  • Give directions to people who are visiting patient’s rooms, take them if needed
  • Work on special projects


Warehouse

  • Help unpack orders and deliver them
  • Assist in labeling inventory
  • File as needed by number
  • Other duties as requested by department Supervisor/Manager


Wound Care

  • File charts and papers
  • Answer phones and make copies
  • Assemble new charts and tear down discharge charts
  • Assist patients to rooms
  • Clean rooms

Special Events
(On & Off Hospital Campus)

  • Assist in manning booths at fairs
  • Assist at community events
  • Assist at luncheons (set-up, serving & clean-up)
