Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehabilitation
A Comprehensive Approach
Florida Hospital Heartland Division’s four-phase Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation program is designed to meet the needs of the patient and family members during and after your hospitalization or your cardiac/pulmonary event.
Our Staff
Our licensed and credentialed staff members are dedicated to the highest standards of quality. A registered nurse, respiratory therapist, exercise physiologist and registered dietitian are here to serve you.
Phase 1: Education
Phase I is an in-hospital program. In this Phase, patients learn how to modify heart and lung disease risk factors. More importantly, patients learn how to modify the risk factors through a change in lifestyle behavior. Continued education for patients and family members continues throughout the rehabilitation program via videos, classes and handouts.
Phase 2: Monitored Exercise
Phase II is a EKG-monitored physical conditioning program that begins shortly after hospitalization for cardiac patients. Medicare covers certain diagnoses like bypass surgery, stable angina or a heart attack within one year.
Any patient whose primary diagnosis is C.O.P.D. (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) or whose shortness of breath interferes with their ability to perform a normal day’s activities is also a potential candidate for pulmonary rehabilitation. The patient will enjoy a personalized exercise program that will progress with your recovery, consultations on: diet, home exercise, stress control, blood pressure control, smoking and other areas of risk factor modification. This phase of the program typically meets three times a week for eight to 12 weeks.
Phase 3: Maintenance Program
This phase is an advanced supervised fitness program that continues to build cardiopulmonary fitness through the use of exercise equipment, recreational activities and group workouts.
The patient’s personal exercise prescription will be tailored to meet your particular needs and goals. EKG, blood pressure and oxygen saturation monitoring is provided at regular intervals. Also, on-going classes provide information and support as the patient continues to modify their lifestyle. Examples of classes offered:
Heart Function
Pulmonary Education
Stress Management
Support Group
Nutrition
Smoking Cessation
Enrollment
To gain admittance into the program, talk to your cardiac/pulmonary specialist or family physician first. A prescription from your doctor will be required. Any questions regarding either the cardiac or pulmonary programs, please contact us.
